JCC offers Phlebotomy Technician Training—Info. Session Jan. 18

Jefferson Community College (JCC), in collaboration with Boston Reed College, will hold a Phlebotomy Technician training program information session for prospective students on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 6-002, Jules Center (Building 6).

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the need for laboratory technicians, including phlebotomists, is expected to grow by 14% between 2006 and 2016. Laboratories rely on the phlebotomy technician to collect quality samples from the patient to produce quality laboratory results. To do this, a phlebotomy technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe, and reliable manner.

The Phlebotomy Technician training program will run from April 9 through May 23, 2012 on JCC’s campus in Watertown. The program consists of 48 hours of classroom training on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and a 40-hour externship in the local community. Upon successful completion of the program the student will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to sit for the national exam to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. The course fee of $2995 includes books, course supplies, externship, and a course certificate of completion.

Military Advanced Education Magazine Recognizes The State University of New York at Potsdam for First Time

The State University of New York at Potsdam was recently named to the 2012 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities by Military Advanced Education magazine. This is the first time that SUNY Potsdam has been honored by the publication.

"We are very honored to receive this designation, which recognizes SUNY Potsdam's continuing commitment to serving this very special and well-deserving population of non-traditional students," said Director of Extended Education Dr. Thomas Fuhr. "A college-wide Veteran and Military Task Force, formed over two years ago, has led to the enhancement of a variety of specific services and implementation of procedures that meet the needs of our growing population of military students and their families, both here in Potsdam and at our Watertown Education Center."

The fifth annual guide included SUNY Potsdam among only 20 percent of institutions of higher education nationwide to be selected. The designation recognizes colleges, universities and trade schools throughout the United States that embrace America's military service members, veterans and their families as students. Military Advanced Education is a journal of higher learning for American service members, and is published by KMI Media Group.

More than 150 active-duty service members, veterans and their families members are currently enrolled as SUNY Potsdam students, either on the Potsdam main campus or through the College's Extension Center in Watertown, located on the campus of Jefferson Community College.

Soldiers, veterans and their families are enrolled in a number of undergraduate and graduate programs at SUNY Potsdam, with one of the more popular majors being teacher education. Programs offered in Watertown that particularly benefit military members and their families include a business administration bachelor's degree program and a graduate program in organizational leadership.

Online nursing education program launched

SUNYIT has launched an online option for students pursuing a master of science degree in nursing education. Interested students can now earn the degree through online study.

"The need for master's prepared faculty to educate future nurses is critical to addressing the nationwide nursing shortage," said Darlene Del Prato, chair of SUNYIT’s department of nursing and health professions. "The convenience of online learning will make it possible for nurses to advance their careers as faculty or administrative leaders in a variety of settings, such as nursing education and hospital staff development."

SUNYIT offers graduate and undergraduate programs in nursing. Its master’s degree programs are registered by the New York State Education Department and are nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

JCC Launches New Physical Education Degree Program

Jefferson Community College announces the launch of a new associate of science (A.S.) degree in Physical Education. Fall semester classes begin on August 29 and students may apply for admission to the physical education degree program, offered through the Liberal Arts Division, immediately.

The Physical Education A.S. program is a transfer degree, designed to be the first two years of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree, leading to a career as a physical education or health education teacher, fitness instructor, athletics coach or recreational therapist. By taking the first two years of coursework at Jefferson, students can significantly reduce the overall cost of their education. Those who complete the associate’s degree only may find employment at state or city parks and recreation departments, resorts with activities or fitness facilities, wellness centers, YMCA's and fitness centers or become a personal trainer, youth coach or fitness equipment salesperson.

“Until now, students who were interested in a physical education career were advised through JCC’s humanities and social sciences degree program,” said Jerilyn E. Fairman, dean for curriculum and instruction at Jefferson. “The new Physical Education degree provides a clear pathway for students to transfer easily to a baccalaureate degree program in physical education.”

Students in the program will benefit from a balanced curriculum of liberal arts, science, health and physical education courses including two new courses, Sport in Society and Responding to Emergencies. Emphasis is placed on sportsmanship, professionalism, health awareness and extracurricular activities.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared for transfer to a baccalaureate physical education program at many colleges and universities. Jefferson has transfer agreements with SUNY Cortland and SUNY Brockport that provide a seamless transition for JCC students to these highly regarded physical education programs. Students may also transfer to out-of-state schools or private colleges and universities such as Pennsylvania State, Springfield College, Salisbury State University, Slippery Rock University, Canisius College, United States Sports Academy, and University of South Carolina.

The Physical Education A.S. degree can be completed in four semesters of full-time study or over a longer period through part-time study. All of the required classes are offered on campus and several are offered online. Students who wish to enroll in this program for the Fall 2011 semester are encouraged to contact the Admissions office, 315-786-2277, and the financial services office, 315-786-2355, as soon as possible to begin the application process. Course registration for new students continues through the start of classes on August 29.

The Sports Management A.S. program is a transfer degree, designed to be the first two years of a four-year business or sports management education. Graduates who continue with their sports management and/or business education may enter the exciting world of professional sports as team managers, personal agents, and executives in the spectrum of businesses that support professional and amateur sports including fitness centers, recreation centers and ice arenas, and sporting goods sales and marketing.

“Students will learn business and management principles and how to apply these principles within the sports industry,” said Edward J. Knapp, vice president for academic affairs at Jefferson. “This program provides a pathway for students to combine their passion for sports with a career opportunity in a professional, amateur or recreational sport industry.”

Students will benefit from a balanced curriculum of business, liberal arts and core sports management courses including the foundations of sports management, sport in society and leadership for sports professionals. Sports management majors will also have an opportunity to gain direct event experience through Jefferson’s office of athletics. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared for transfer to a baccalaureate program in either business or sports management at many colleges and universities, including SUNY Cortland, SUNY Canton, SUNY Brockport and Cazenovia College. By taking their first two years of study at Jefferson, students can significantly reduce the overall cost of their education.

SUNY Canton Adds Four-Year Veterinary Technology Degree

SUNY Canton is now one of about 20 schools in the country to offer a Bachelor’s of Science in Veterinary Technology degree.

The College has received approval from the State University of New York and the New York State Department of Education to offer the four-year program beginning in Fall 2011.

“As one of only three schools in New York State with this program, we now provide Northern New York with a level of education in the veterinary sciences field that hasn’t been offered before,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “Graduates of this program will have their choice of job opportunities locally, regionally and nationally because they are in such high demand in a variety of fields.”

SUNY Canton’s veterinary science technology program has been in existence since 1978, making it one of the oldest accredited programs in the state. The new four-year degree compliments the College’s associate’s degree program but will not replace it. It is designed to offer an alternative for students seeking a bachelor’s degree.

“Our graduates from the two-year degree program consistently score very high on the Veterinary Technology National Exam (VTNE) but often want to further their education,” said Dr. Mary O’Horo Loomis, D.V.M., the program’s director. “They want more advanced technical training, are looking for supervisory or managerial roles in practices that require this level of education, or are interested in Master’s and other advanced degree programs.”

The program will expand a student’s education in veterinary science, physical sciences, public health issues and occupational safety, and will also include other electives. The program offers the potential for students to take the courses required for entrance into most veterinary colleges.

Many of the classes will be held in the College’s Newell Veterinary Technical Center, which houses the Veterinary Science Technology programs. The 12,000-square-foot building opened in 2003 and includes state-of-the-art clinics and teaching facilities, as well as conference, reception and study areas. Kennels for dogs, cats, rabbits and mice, an x-ray room, surgery facilities, labs, and classrooms are also located in the building.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment outlook for veterinary technology graduates is expected to grow 36 percent over the next decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. The anticipated growth is due to the continued increase in demand for veterinary care.

In addition to private practice, veterinary technologists and technicians are also employed by government agencies who oversee public health issues, food quality assurance, and animal disease control programs. Graduates will also have the opportunity to begin careers in research laboratories, university centers and pharmaceutical companies who conduct biochemical research on animal models.

Career advancement accounts - MyCAA - provide military spouses with opportunities to pursue portable careers in high-demand, high-growth occupations. The current program began as a demonstration project with the Department of Labor in January 2008 at 18 locations in eight states. Program eligibility was limited to the spouses of active duty service members in the junior ranks and accounts awarded under the demonstration were targeted to nationally-identified high-demand, high-growth industry sectors that provide the greatest opportunity for career portability.Over time the program was expanded to include military spouses of all pay grades and all programs of study.

The changes reflect a return to the original intent of the program-to assist spouses of service members in the pay grades of E1 - E5, W1 - W2, and O1 - O2 achieve portable careers. The changes also align the program with responsible fiscal planning by the Defense Department. We believe the new program guidelines will help sustain the program.

Under the new guidelines, education counselors will work with all military spouses to help develop career and education goals and plans, and assist them in navigating all available federal education benefits toward these goals.

New Program Guidelines:

Eligible Participants: Spouses of E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2
DoD-funded assistance: up to $4,000, vice $6,000 under previous program
Annual Cap: $2,000 per spouse, per fiscal year (waiver required to use more than $2,000)
Time limit to use funding: three years from the start date of the first class
Approved Education programs: associate's degrees, licensure, and certifications

Career Consultants will:

Assist spouses in identifying other funding resources for higher academic degrees
Assist all active duty spouses (whether eligible for financial assistance or not) with career counseling
Waivers will be available for spouses pursuing licensures or certifications requiring an up-front fee greater than $2,000, up to the total maximum assistance of $4,000.
