JCC Announces New Certificate Program in Energy Technology

Jefferson Community College announces the launch of a new certificate program in Energy Technology beginning with the Fall 2015 semester. Fall classes begin August 31 and students may apply for admission to the energy technology program, offered through the Math/Science, Technology, Health & Business Division, immediately.

The Energy Technology Certificate program is designed to prepare students for direct entry into a wide variety of jobs throughout the growing clean energy industry and to further enhance the knowledge of anyone already working in the energy field, such as electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians or contractors.  Energy industry sectors include renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, geothermal; hydroelectric, also nuclear; energy efficiency; and power transmission.  Within each sector there are opportunities in sales and marketing, installation, manufacturing, and plant operations.

Students will gain hands-on experience and knowledge in selected areas of energy production along with the related systems of generation such as fuel procurement and energy transmission. Students will gain a working understanding of theories of basic electrical, basic plumbing and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) as they relate to the energy field. Upon successful completion of the program, students can receive the following third party certificates: National Career Readiness Certificate, Skills USA Energy Industry Employability Skills Certificate, and an OSHA 10 hour (construction) certificate.  Additionally, graduates become eligible to take North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) entry–level examinations in solar heating (SH) and photovoltaics (PV).

Jefferson’s program is supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) Workforce Development and Training Program and provides partial reimbursement for specific course tuitions.
